The bucket list: Part Two

Recently, we discussed the concept of having a bucket list and looked at some of the most popular bucket list items, as indicated in a study of over 2,000 people. Sadly, researchers have found that most adults will only ever fulfil five of their lifelong ambitions, which made us wonder if there are any techniques that could help us to make it more likely that we achieve our life ambitions. Here are just a few of the best tips.

Be specific

The Guardian recommends being specific about your goals. So, with the second most popular bucket list item being travelling the world, it would be better to set a more specific goal if you're really set on achieving it. Perhaps use a map to find out which countries you are set on visiting and which you're not so bothered about. You can then look at which sights you want to see in those countries so you can narrow down the area you want to cover. This will help you create a much more realistic, and more achievable, goal.

Pick your battles

While there may be hundreds of things you want to achieve in your life, you should try to prioritise the few that you really want to make happen. As pointed out in the study above, most adults only achieve five of their lifetime goals, so make sure you pick out the five that matter to you most.

Break it down

Sometimes it seems much easier to dream about our bucket list goals than to actually sit down and start planning them. For example, it can be quite intimidating to say that you're going to achieve your dream of travelling the world, but if you break it down into much smaller goals – planning a route, researching visas and booking your flights – it becomes much more manageable.

Protect your assets

Whether your dream is to travel the world, gain new, exciting skills or have once-in-a-lifetime experiences, you'll be in the best situation to do it if you are financially secure. It may not seem like the most exciting part of planning to reach your bucket list goals, but insuring your health, your life and your home means that if the worst should happen, it won't get in the way of you enjoying your life.
