Keeping fit through the winter months

Spring is supposedly just around the corner, but what with high winds, floods all over the country and snow yet to come, it doesn't seem likely that we'll be heading out on picnics any time soon! One of the hardest things about winter is getting motivated to exercise, but it's so important to find ways to keep yourself fit and healthy throughout the colder months. Here we give you a few tips on keeping fit in spite of the big chill – before you know it, spring will have sprung!

Try something different

It can be hard to feel motivated to drag yourself to the gym or out in the cold, especially if the only thing on offer is a jog on the same beaten track or the treadmill. Get excited about working out by swapping your usual routine for something a little different this winter. Whether you've always wanted to try the hula hoop, squash or that new fitness DVD, winter is the time to experiment.

Wear the right gear

If you plan on venturing outdoors for your exercise, make sure you wear the right gear, as being cold is just another reason to stop you from heading out! Women's Health Mag recommends wearing thermal, insulating clothing to keep you protected in the cold weather.

Buddy up

Enlist a friend to help you get fit and support them in return. The festive season is filled with parties and social events, which can often make the beginning of the New Year feel decidedly lonely. Buddying up with a friend is a great way to keep yourself motivated to stay fit, hopefully with a few laughs along the way, too!
